Cover letters are super important when you're applying for your dream role - because they can help you aim toward the specific role or employer you’re trying to connect with, they can often be the deciding factor in your application! While your resume might not be updated so often, your cover letter needs to be different for each application because it’s your main tool to help secure an interview.

The central idea of a cover letter is that it gives you the chance to introduce yourself to your potential employer, and let them know why your particular set of experiences and skills make you the ideal candidate for the role they’re advertising. It’s your chance to explain why you’re qualified for the job, and as it’s often the first contact you’ll have with a prospective employer, it’s super important to make a good impression.

But what qualities make for a good cover letter? Great question, and one we're happy to answer!

• CONTACT DETAILS
Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people seem to hide their contact details in tiny fonts, or odd locations on the page. Make it easy for a recruiter or organisation to reach out by making sure your contact details are listed nice and clearly on the page!

• SHOW THAT YOU MEET THE JOB REQUIREMENTS
While you don’t want to simply copy and paste from the ad itself, you should try and make sure that what the employer has referenced they’re looking for in their job ad is reflected back in what you’re explaining you’re capable of doing in your cover letter. Really take time to examine the ad and figure out what the hirer is focusing on as far as requirements are concerned, and ensure that you’re able to list your own selling points that match up accordingly.

• KEYWORDS
Take a look over the job description and make a list of any keywords that stand out - it’s a great idea to ensure you include them in your cover letter.

• KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET
No cover letter should go over a page, and ideally you should aim to keep it at about half a page in length. Much better to be brief, but punchy and informative. Be clear in your language, and keep it to the point.
