We can't believe it - it's time our final Fast Five for 2017 is here and ready for your eyeballs, and if you're into viral short stories, assessing business related listicles, and poking fun at LinkedIn profile pics, well you're in real luck today. Enjoy!
CAT PERSON
It’s been a million internet years (so, just over a week) since Cat Person, a short story in the New Yorker, went totally viral on social media. There are rumours now that the author has nabbed a film deal after her nightmare dating tale that resulted in women everywhere shuddering with a sad sense of familiarity took off on Twitter and Facebook, so if you HAVEN’T bothered to read it yet, best hop on it before it becomes some kind of Hollywood blockbuster. For further insight into the explosive response this story had from both sexes, check out the Twitter account Men React to Cat Person - it’s exactly what it says on the tin!
THE CRAPPY HANDBOOK OF LINKEDIN PROFILE PICS
If you’ve spent any time whatsoever on LinkedIn, you will no doubt read this post describing the assorted types of LinkedIn profile pics out there with a feeling of recognition and delight. It’s super funny, but also eerily accurate. The Adrenaline Accountant, The Wedding Crasher, and Planet Head are my favourites, but feel free to choose your own.
ELEVEN BUSINESS FADS THAT NEED TO DIE
How accurate is this list of business fads that ought to die a quick and painful death? Look, as far as we’re concerned it’s a little hit or miss but this rant about business buzzwords certainly resonated!
To end, some business buzzwords that deserve to die in 2018: pivot, lean-in, agile, unicorn, disrupt (it refuses to go), gig economy, machine learning, Industrial Revolution 4.0 (automation, again), intrapreneur (corporate entrepreneur), corporate story-telling, push tolerance, discretionary effort, business ecosystem, Millennials (enough, already), diversity (having a mix of people making decisions shouldn't need a special tag) and creatives (aren't we all?).
Intrapreneur... good gracious!
NINE WAYS TO CREATE A PERFECTLY ORGANISED AND DECLUTTERED OFFICE
Yes, it’s a post on the OfficeWorks website (and no, this is not a sponsored article), but we gotta say, there are some great tips on how to declutter your office space in this piece! Remind us for the fifth year in a row to add a charging station to our Christmas list only to somehow still not get one, and have to live another 365 days in a ratking made up of computer cords and charging cables.
THE INSANE TRUE STORY OF HOW TITANIC WAS MADE
It’s coming up to the 20th anniversary of the film Titanic! Where did the time, and our youth, go? It’s one of the biggest films in cinematic history, now find out more about how it was all put together by reading this insightful Buzzfeed profile on the movie. It’s super interesting and full of fantastic facts, including this one that wasn’t actually about Titanic: did you know James Cameron managed to make Terminator 2 from script to premiere in just 13 months? That is EXTRAORDINARY. “He shot the movie six days a week, and on the seventh day, he edited” - now THAT’S what I call a work ethic.
